The steps below are for the subscription version of Visio Online Plan 2, and one-time purchase (non-subscription) versions of Visio 2019, 2016, or 2013. (For Visio 2010 or 2007, follow the steps in Office 2010 or Office 2007.) Visio is sold as a stand-alone application so if you don't have it yet, Buy or try Visio.
If you have a subscription to Visio Online Plan 2 you won't see an option to install it unless you have an assigned license. If you're the Office 365 admin responsible for assigning licenses, see Assign licenses to users.
If you have one of these non-subscription versions you should have a received a product key with your purchase. Before installing Visio the first time, sign in with an existing or new Microsoft Account and enter your product key* at office.com/setup. Redeeming your key links your account with the Visio app and you only have to do this once. Already did this? Go ahead and Sign in to download Visio.
Microsoft HUP: You bought Visio for personal use through your company HUP benefit and have a product key, see Install Office through HUP (The same steps apply to stand-alone versions of Visio purchased through HUP.)
Volume license versions: IT departments might use a different method to install volume license editions of Visio throughout their organization. Talk to your IT department for installation help.
Third-party seller: You bought Visio from a third-party and you're having problems with the product key.
Step 1: Sign in to download Visio
- Go to www.office.com and if you're not already signed in, select Sign in.
- Sign in with the account you associated with this version of Visio. This account can be a Microsoft account (used with non-subscription versions), or work or school account (used with subscription versions).Forgot your account details? See I forgot the account I use with Office.
- After signing in, follow the steps below that match the type of account you signed in with for your subscription or non-subscription version of Visio.Visio Professional (or Standard)
Non-subscription version- From the Office home page select Install Office.
- If you have multiple Office products you may have to scroll through the list of your owned products, or if you have an Office 365 subscription, from the header, select Services and subscriptions which lists all the Microsoft products you own.Locate the version of Visio you want to install and select Install.
Tip: To install Visio in a different language, or to install the 64-bit version, select the link Other options. Choose the language and bit version you want, and then select Install.Visio Online Plan 2
Subscription version- From the Office home page select Install Office apps > Other install options. (If you set a different start page, go to portal.office.com/OLS/MySoftware.aspx.)
- Under Software, select Visio. Choose the language and the bit version you want, then select Install. (To install 64-bit, under Version, select Advanced, choose 64-bit, and then select Install.)Tip: If Visio isn't listed under the Software navigation heading on the left-side of your page, it probably means you don't have a license. Check if you have a license and if you don't, contact your admin and ask to have one assigned to you.
Visio should now begin downloading. Follow the prompts in Step 2 to complete the installation.
Install Visio
- Depending on your browser, select Run (in Edge or Internet Explorer), Setup (in Chrome), or Save File (in Firefox).If you see the User Account Control prompt that says, Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device? select Yes.The install begins.
- Your install is finished when you see the phrase, 'You're all set! Visio is installed now' and an animation plays to show you where to find the Visio app on your computer.Follow the instructions in the window to find Visio, for example depending on your version of Windows, select Start and then scroll to find Visio from your list of apps.
Microsoft HUP: You bought Office for personal use through your company and have a product key, see Install Office through HUP.

Sign in to download Office

- From the Office home page select Install Office.
- Select Install (or depending on your version, Install Office>).
You signed in with a work or school account- From the Office 365 home page select Install Office apps (If you set a different start page, go to aka.ms/office-install.)
- Select Office 365 apps to begin the installation.
Tip: The 64-bit version is installed by default unless Office detects you already have a 32-bit version of Office (or a stand-alone Office app such as Project or Visio) installed. In this case, the 32-bit version of Office will be installed instead.
To change from a 32-bit version to a 64-bit version or vice versa, you need to uninstall Office first (including any stand-alone Office apps you have such as Project of Visio). Once the uninstall is complete, sign in again to www.office.com and select Other install options, choose the language and version you want (64 or 32-bit), and then select Install. (See Install Visio or Install Project if you need to reinstall those stand-alone apps.) - This completes the download of Office to your device. To complete the installation, follow the prompts in the 'Install Office' section below.Tip:Don't see an install option after signing in? There could be an issue with your account. Activate Office
- To open an Office app, select the Start button (lower-left corner of your screen) and type the name of an Office app, like Word.If you have Windows 8.1 or 8.0, type the name of an Office app on the Start screen. Can't find your Office apps?
- To open the Office app, select its icon in the search results.
- When the Office app opens, accept the license agreement. Office is activated and ready to use.Note: The Activation Wizard appears if Office has trouble activating. Complete the steps in the wizard to finish activating Office.
Sign in and install Office
- Go to www.office.com and if you're not already signed in, select Sign in.Note: If you bought Office for personal use through your company's Microsoft HUP benefit, you may not be able to sign in here. Find installation help at Install Office through HUP.

- From the Office home page select Install Office to start the download.

- Select Office 365 apps to begin the download.
Note:Don't see an install option after signing in? There could be an issue with your account. Select Need help? from above and review the issues listed in the section Account questions. - Follow the instructions below to complete installing your Office apps.
Install Office
- Once the download has completed, open Finder, go to Downloads, and double-click Microsoft Office installer.pkg file (the name might vary slightly).Tip: If you see an error that says the Microsoft Office installer.pkg can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer, wait 10 seconds and move the downloaded file to your desktop. Hold Control + click the file to launch the installer.
- On the first installation screen, select Continue to begin the installation process.
- Review the software license agreement, and then click Continue.
- Select Agree to agree to the terms of the software license agreement.
- Choose how you want to install Office and click Continue.
- Review the disk space requirements or change your install location, and then click Install.Note: If you want to only install specific Office apps and not the entire suite, click the Customize button and uncheck the programs you don't want.
- Enter your Mac login password, if prompted, and then click Install Software. (This is the password that you use to log in to your Mac.)
- The software begins to install. Click Close when the installation is finished. If Office installation fails, see What to try if you can't install or activate Office for Mac.
Launch an Office for Mac app and start the activation process
- Click the Launchpad icon in the Dock to display all of your apps.
- Click the Microsoft Word icon in the Launchpad.
- The What's New window opens automatically when you launch Word. Click Get Started to start activating. If you need help activating Office, see Activate Office for Mac. If Office activation fails, see What to try if you can't install or activate Office for Mac.
Installation notes
- Go to Finder > Applications and open the Office app you want.
- In the Dock, Control+click or right-click the app icon and choose Options > Keep in Dock.

If you have Office 365 Home, you can share your Office 365 Home subscription with up to five family members or other people. Each person can install Office on all their devices and be signed in to five at the same time.
